Immigrant Justice Program

The Immigrant Justice Program organizes the leadership of low-wage South Asian immigrant workers and families, many of whom are fighting deportation, to win safe access to city services for immigrants and an end to deportation policies and police abuse.

CAMPAIGNS:

Community Defense Networks against Immigration Raids
Since escalated raids nationally and locally, our members are conducting Know Your Rights workshops in mosques, homes, schools, and neighborhoods throughout the city to build defense and response networks against immigration raids.

DRUM leads the No Raids Network of groups across the region to win non-collaboration agreements between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement and government agencies.

National Just Immigration Reform
DRUM works with local alliances (Immigrant Communities in Action) and national alliances (National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights) to win just immigration policies.  Our People’s Platform developed through community consultas with hundreds of diverse immigrant communities is:

  1. Legalization for individual workers and families who are actively contributing to our country and a path to legalization for future flows; No guestworker program of work & leave that has no path to legal status.
  2. Improved and faster family reunification opportunities for all;
  3. Enforce the protection of human and civil rights by reducing detention & deportation, ending collaboration between the DHS and public agencies, and ending deaths & abuses of migrants at the borders;
  4. Non-compliance with the REAL ID Act by New York State and other states, the guarantee of equal access to driver’s licenses for immigrants, and one license for all;
  5. Equal protection of labor rights of undocumented workers.

 MEMBERSHIP SERVICES:

Azaadi Legal Defense
Azaadi (meaning ‘Freedom’ in Urdu & Hindi) Legal Defense provides multi-lingual immigration services for our membership including:

  • Referrals for free and low-cost immigration lawyers for deportation cases
  • Translation in Bangla, Hindi, Urdu, and Gujarati
  • Deportee Family Advocacy referrals for housing, status adjustment, public benefits
  • Legal research, advocating with DHS/ICE officials and consulates
  • Support for South Asian immigrants being deported from Canada
