Consultant- Gala Event Organizer

(Part Time 6 Month Position)

 

 

Work with a dynamic multi-generational, low-income, immigrant-led organization for social justice in NYC.  DRUM is seeking a highly self-motivated, experienced consultant for 6 months to organize a 10th Anniversary Gala fundraiser.  We value proven experience, enthusiasm, broad movement building vision, attention to detail, and a collaborative work ethic.

 

Founded in 2000, our mission is to build the power of low-income South Asian immigrant adults and youth directly affected by the issues we address to win systemic change.  Desi means South Asian or people from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Guyana, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Trinidad.  DRUM’s program areas are:  the South Asian Workers Center, the Immigrant & Racial Justice program, YouthPower!, and the Global Justice program.

 

Responsibilities:

 

•Position requires 5-10 hour work weeks; Hours will increase nearing the Gala date in April 2011

•Work with the Executive Director to plan, implement, and coordinate DRUM’s 10th Anniversary Gala in April 2011

•Coordinate all logistics- booking event space, purchase of all supplies, catering, payment to vendors

•Form a Host Committee, manage and support it to meet goals, communicate regularly

•Develop capacity of Steering Committee and staff members to set and meet goals for fundraising for gala

•Carry out a publicity plan including creating materials, online publicity, and community media

•Coordinate mass mailings and phone banking to meet gala turnout and donor raising goals

•Assist in planning and managing the program including special guests, speakers, entertainment, audio-visuals

•Create report of gala fundraising and donor recruitment outcomes

•Work with Development staff to integrate gala contacts into donor raising plans

•Report to the Executive Director weekly; report to the Steering Committee quarterly

 

Qualifications:

 

•At least 3 years proven experience with special events, fundraising, or development work

•Excellent planning, writing, and communication skills

•Knowledge of social justice organizations in New York City

•Well-organized and able to manage strict timelines and details efficiently

•Computer proficiency, including basic graphic design and Excel

•Ability to work effectively under pressure and with multiple priorities

•Ability to work independently and with supervision as well as being an enthusiastic team player

 

Compensation:

Consultant fee is commensurate with experience.

School Based Youth Organizer

(Full Time)

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

•Position requires 40 hours work weeks

•Set up and run in-school services and organizing programs for Queens public schools

•Meet monthly goals to recruit youth members and develop youth leaders in campaigns

•Help expand DRUM’s youth base beyond South Asians to all Queens public school youth

•Grow youth mobilization contact list

•Coordinate the “Dignity in Schools” Campaign- NY Chapter to: work in coalition, research schools discipline policy, train youth leaders to play lead campaign roles, attend bi-weekly coalition meetings with youth leaders, facilitate strategy development, and implement campaign plan

•Oversee distribution and implementation of the “Immigrant Safe Zones” report with the Advancement Project

•Meet turn-out goals for campaign actions

•Assist in membership mailings and turn-out calls

•Attend and develop youth to lead bi-weekly membership meetings and monthly Campaign Leaders Meetings

•Report to the Executive Director weekly; report to the Steering Committee quarterly

 

Qualifications:

 

•At least 2 years proven experience with youth or membership organizing and/or youth development

•Excellent planning, writing, and communication skills

•Knowledge of youth and educational justice organizing, school to prison pipeline

•Well-organized and able to manage strict timelines and details efficiently

•Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel

•Ability to work effectively to meet timelines and with multiple priorities

•Ability to work independently and with supervision as well as being an enthusiastic team player

 

 

Compensation:

 

Starting salary is commensurate with experience.

Development & Communications Director

(Full Time)

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

•Position requires 40 hours work weeks in the office; Some flexibility to work from home

•Coordinate organizational Fundraising, including: making & implementing organizational fundraising work-plans, keeping up-to-date development calendars, and timely communication of activities with the Steering Committee and Executive Director

•Coordinate communications, including: publish organizational newsletter, update website, send email newsletters, update media database, distribute press releases

•Grow the organizational budget from $350,000 to $500,000 within 1-2 years by expanding funding sources

•Research new foundation sources and develop new funder relationships, especially in the fields of: Human Rights, National Security, Immigrant Worker/Economic Justice, and Youth Development funders

•Launch a revamped donor campaign to raise over $50,000 a year from membership dues, donors, and special events; coordinate and develop skills of Steering Committee and staff to meet goals of donor campaign

•Work with a Consultant to plan and carry out DRUM’s 10th Anniversary Gala in Spring 2011

•Write and submit all grants and reports in a timely manner

•Accurately organize and maintain grants information and conduct follow-up tasks

•Prepare all supporting materials for applications, including maintaining up-to-date financial reports

•Research and acquire fundraising resources such as handbooks and trainings for Steering Committee

•Report to the Executive Director weekly; report to the Steering Committee quarterly

 

Qualifications:

 

•At least 3 years proven experience with development work including grants research & writing, communications or press coordination, funder relationship building, donor base development, events planning, and donor raising

•Excellent planning, writing, and communication skills

•Have been the primary fundraiser for an organization with at least a $400,000 budget

•Knowledge of immigrant, racial justice, and education reform issues and funders

•Relationships with and/or knowledge of funders in at least 2-3 of the following fields- immigrant rights, economic justice, youth development, human rights, and/or national security

•Well-organized and able to manage strict timelines and details efficiently

•Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel

•Ability to work effectively under pressure and with multiple priorities

•Ability to work independently and with supervision as well as being an enthusiastic team player
