Vote NO on Jail Expansion!

On Thursday, 8 DRUM members from all of our bases testified at the City Council’s Land Use Committee’s hearing on the mayor’s jail expansion plan. Members came after school and work, waited many hours, to demand City Council vote NO to the jail expansion plan. Members testified the $10 billion should be used to fund more counselors in schools, improve public housing, and provide support to working class people and immigrants, not building jails.

Members questioned the progessivism (fauxgressivism) of the council, and whether NYC can claim to be a sanctuary city. Trump is asking for billions to build detention centers to lock up and deport people. Many City Council members have said they are anti-Trump, but then support spending $10 billion to build jails. It’s up to us to push electeds to prioritize investment in the health of our communities rather than jails.

Call your local Council member and demand they vote no to the jail expansion plan!
